Monday, being the first Monday in July heralds another ministers in conversation at 10 am on Zoom
The day after the June meeting, my wife (Lez) went into St Michael’s Hospital in Hayle to have her second hip replacement. So from that moment my whole routine and pattern of doing things changed. My son-in-law helped me to put a bed downstairs for the duration of the recovery which meant moving an arm chair out of the way, (as much as one can push an arm chair out of the way!), positioning the raised toilet seat, arranging some stools to put things on or lean crutches against and so on.
All the while, Mr Dog the collie was looking rather perplexed because he likes his pack being at home together, and he likes order and predictability, a bit like most Anglicans really. The beginning of the recuperation period also coincided with the heatwave so Mr Dog was awake and being taken to the beach at 5am so he could have enough exercise and slowly steam dry during the day. Come to think about it ‘slowly steaming’ might describe many pew-dwellers too.
So in the course of the last month I have been allowed to play in the kitchen – again, learned the watering and feeding regime for the tomatoes, the garden birds and the pond fish and I have discovered how to program the washing machine. The iron is no mystery, having learned the skill as part of my Cub scout ‘good housekeeper’ badge! Washing Machines, however, have changed considerably since the Vatrix Agitator with built in electric mangle that I uses for the same badge.
It all means I have been rather busy but I am pleased to report that the recovery is going well as I wilt a little under the weight of normal duties plus the growing list of new ones! My sentence, I know, is mercifully short as Lez gets more confident with the new hip and gradually less reliant on the crutches and me to fetch and carry. So it is with a mixture of gratitude and empathy when I think of those caring for people with illnesses and disabilities that will only get worse rather than better.
In the midst of all this I have been appointed as a Governor again, at a local primary school and we are well into story telling season, For about 15 years now, I have offered all classes in the primary school an afternoon of singing and story telling which takes good deal of energy and time.
Next Saturday we have the discernment day for potential new readers so please do pray for them.
Monday being the monthly conversation we have a few things to talk about but we will not meet in August.
